What to Do After Getting a Tattoo

Whenever you get a new tattoo, you should always ensure that it is properly cleaned and maintained. Inktastic in Brooklyn, NY shares some tips that you should keep in mind until your tattoo is fully healed.

When your tattoo is completed, we will cover it with a bandage. Ideally, you should leave it on for at least 3 hours to prevent the tattoo from becoming infected.

After removing the bandage, clean your tattoo using lukewarm water and unscented soap, and then pat it dry with a soft towel. Once you are done with this process, remember not to re-bandage the tattoo.

Whenever you wash your tattoo, pat it dry and apply an antibacterial ointment twice a day for 3 to 5 days. After that period, you can switch to a regular lotion on a daily basis until the tattoo is fully healed.

Apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor ointment on your tattoo after washing it. Repeat this step 2 to 3 times a day for 3 days. On the fourth day, switch to a small amount of unscented hand lotion, and use that daily until the tattoo heals. The healing period normally takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Healing Process

Throughout the healing process, your tattoo will start to peel at some point. That is completely normal. Make sure not to scratch your tattoo—just let it flake naturally.

Avoid going swimming for at least 2 weeks because that can damage your tattoo. Also, you should always use sunblock if you are exposing your tattoo to the sun.
